How long have you been a member of the team?
Since September 2007.

 

 

 

 

How and why did you get involved? 
I was a member of another search and rescue team but I wanted to work with search dogs. I started as an operational support.
What is your role on the team?
I’m the Chair and Operations Officer, dealing with the day-to-day running of the team. I’m also an ALSAR national search dog assessor.
What’s the most rewarding aspect? 
Seeing Zak enjoy the work he does.
What’s the least enjoyable element? 
Fuel costs.
What’s your day job? 
I’m a security systems engineer.
Have you got any additional skills you bring to the team? 
I’m a Level 3 Flood and Swiftwater Rescue Technician, and a canine first responder instructor.
What type of dog is Zak?
He’s a red border collie, born in 2008.
What’s his favourite toy? 
His search toy is a purple Kong Wubba, but his favourite at home is a blue elephant.
How long has Zak been a search dog?
He qualified just after his first birthday after around 10 months’ training. He was found to train as a search dog.
Any awards or commendations? 
Following successfully finding a man who’d been missing for three days Zak was nominated for the Dogs’ Trust Hero Dog Award in 2012 and named as runner-up. In 2013 he was awarded a commendation by the PDSA.
